INDEPENDENT ZVILLER CEMETERY IN BOSTON<\/h1>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Many years ago, in the Volyn Governorate of Poland, there was a town called Zvyagel.<\/p>

In 1795, Russia annexed Poland, including Volyn and the town of Zvyagel, whose Jewish population made up more than half of its residents. Tsarina Catherine the Great ordered the town to be renamed Novohrad-Volynsky. From that point on, Novohrad-Volynsky belonged to the territory that is now the Zhytomyr Oblast of Ukraine, which at the time was part of the Russian Empire.<\/p>

The Jewish community struggled to adjust to the new, complicated name. Even the original name, \u201cZvyagel,\u201d was difficult to pronounce in Yiddish, so they stubbornly continued to use the shortened form, \u201cZville.\u201d<\/p>

By the end of the 19th century, life in the Russian Empire had become increasingly difficult, and rumors of pogroms were widespread. Many Jews from Novohrad-Volynsky emigrated to America, settling primarily in Boston. Family members, friends, and neighbors soon followed. They stayed close to one another, preserved the customs of their ancestors, and continued to speak Yiddish.<\/p>

In 1930, activists from the \u201cNew Americans\u201d organization purchased a plot of land for the burial of their fellow townspeople and decided to name the cemetery after their hometown, \u201cZville.\u201d Following Yiddish naming conventions, they added the suffix \u201c-er,\u201d creating \u201cZviller.\u201d Next to the Zviller Cemetery are burial grounds for people from other towns in Volyn, named according to the same pattern: Korets \u2014 Koretser; Stepan \u2014 Stepiner; Kovno \u2014 Kovner. The founders placed a memorial plaque with their names on the cemetery gate columns. Among the short list of founders, three are named Samuel \u2014 a result of the common practice of replacing a wide variety of traditional Jewish names with a single fashionable American one. Shoel, Shimon, Shmul, and Shevach all became \u201cSamuel\u201d; Lazor, Leib, Leibish, and Lemel became \u201cLouis.\u201d This standardization, of course, complicates genealogical research.<\/p>

Fortunately, the gravestones from that period include not only the new Anglicized names and surnames but also the Hebrew names borne by their ancestors in their hometowns. Although the translated surnames sometimes sounded different or even changed beyond recognition (Magnet \u2192 Mednik, Zhuravenko \u2192 Iordan), I was able to find records in the Novohrad-Volynskyi registers that perfectly match the Hebrew inscriptions on the graves in the Zviller Cemetery. This strongly indicates that they all came from Novohrad-Volynskyi (Zvyagel, Zville).<\/p>

In 2023, the Ukrainian government restored the town\u2019s historical name, \u201cZvyagel.\u201d You will not find Novohrad-Volynskyi on modern maps \u2014 today it is simply \u201cZvyagel.\u201d For obvious reasons, no Jewish community remains there, and no one calls the city \u201cZville\u201d anymore.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Solly Alperin’s family originates from the town of Mezhirichi in the Rivne Governorate, located near Novograd-Volynskyi. Solly’s Hebrew name is «Shlomo Eli» in honor of his great-grandfather. Solly’s great-grandfather, grandfather, and father all bore the surname «Galperin.» Solly’s siblings were also Galperins. Only his uncle, Gersh, his father’s younger brother, was listed as an Alperin. His descendants, also buried in Zwiller Cemetery, inherited the Alperin surname, and others began using this spelling in America.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

A large family of Avrum Andrievsky’s (1777-1825) descendants lived in Novohrad-Volynskyi. Many of them suffered during the pogroms and the Holocaust. No one from their family lives in the city now.
Louis Andrievsky was born in Novohrad-Volynskyi, and upon arriving in America, he changed his surname from Andrievsky to Andrevs. From his double name «Avrum Leib,» he used the middle name «Leib,» translated it as «Louis,» and was always listed as «Louis.» On Louis’s tombstone, relatives wrote the incorrect Hebrew name «Yehuda Leib» instead of «Avrum Leib.» The rest of his birth certificate matches his birth certificate.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
